Notes Lyrics from 'Please, please, please let me get what I want' by The Smiths.
He doesn’t hear Annie when she comes home, when she walks into the living room. He doesn’t even notice her standing over him. He’s too lost to the voice of Morrissey in his ears. His eyes closed as he sings along with this tortured poet that has an uncanny knack of writing a song for every single emotion Gilbert has ever felt.
“So for once in my life
Let me…get what I want
Lord knows, it would be the first time
Lord knows, it would be the first time.”
It’s only when the last note fades out and he wipes a stray tear away from his eye that he sees her standing over him, a warm smile on her face. God he’s such a bloody idiot. He should stop doing this to himself. She loves Owen, it’s so bloody obvious it’s completely
impossible not to see it and here he is in her house, waiting for her just like he does everyday and she barely even sees him, doesn’t hear him when he tries to tell her he’s in love with her, because that isn’t what she wants, not from him. She wants Owen and she always will.
Please, please, please
Let me get what I wantHe should really leave. Stop torturing himself like this every single day. It’s bad enough being dead, but this-
this is so much worse and yet at the same time it’s the most wonderful feeling he’s ever experienced.
“Don’t you have a home to go to?” she teases, grinning down at him.
“Not exactly.”
“Want to go for a walk?” she asks, completely unaware of what she’s doing to him.
“Yeah why not.”
“The boys’ll be back soon, so I’m just going to pop the kettle on for when are,” she says leaving him alone in the living room.
“I love you, Annie.”
“Did you just say something?” she calls back from the kitchen.
“Nah, nothing at all,” he lies, forcing himself to stand and put his coat back on. Maybe one day he’ll say it when she can hear him, when she’s actually listening.
Maybe.
